Shana and Bob, sailing friends, tie the knot.
Fair winds and good holding.
Eagle and I hauled and painted Shanti ourselves. We were inspired by my grumpy and hyper-competent gang of east coast one-design friends who apparently haul, paint, de-rig, re-glass, re-deck, and otherwise completely eschew the paid services of the boating labor class. Like once a week, if you believe them.
Fine, but in my opinion, even if I’m as handy as everyone claims I am, this is about the same ROI as changing the oil in your truck: Same money, same quality, twice the time, three times the hassle.
Also, an important take-away: In SF Bay, there’s no need to do boat work anywhere but KKMI. I paid the same for a haul-out and yard space at dodgy San Rafael YH as I would at our “notoriously expensive” yard across the bay, but gave up decent equipment, any semblance of security, handy advice, an inspiring view of AC boats on the hard, and a well-stocked chandlery. In exchange for this non-savings, I got my boat nearly dropped off a rickety dolly, a spreader bent on the crane, and some pretty sketchy characters jumping out of the dumpsters every morning.
Did I mention that I didn’t save any money? Short advice: Pay the $1K flat rate in the spring.
How did we do it?
Eagle did most of the backbreaking work around step #1, which basically buys him out of my share of the Islander, in my opinion.
Eagle and Longboard
Down to the primer
Back into the water where it is safe
Paul from the Olson 911 “Plus Sixteen”, who was a huge help in our TransPac Campaign (giving us a #4 jib, as well as a ton of helpful advice) is racing in the double-handed division of the Pacific Cup.
Best of luck, Paul. Stay safe, stay sane.
Update: Paul and Tony have taken 2nd in the double-handed catagory. Congrats!
Day after our Angel Island boat camping trip. Went on a practice sail (around the bay, out the gate, halfway to Bonita, back down to Pt. Blunt) on Charlie, Eben, and John’s 911 “Elusive” with Don, the sailmaker from Quantum. Lot’s of interesting feedback on manuevers and sail trim.
Shanti, Heather, and I joined Bob, Shana, KDP, and Helen aboard Charisma at Angel Island for a night out on the mooring balls. We should really do this more often.
Eagle came out for the day, which made it even more special.
Saturday, we had a great hike up to the bluff above Racoon Straits, and watched the start of the Single-Handed Transpac. Good luck and god bless, guys.
Happened to be in Southern California for business, so I arranged to go down to Long Beach and pick up HKE up at AG and Gary’s after the LA Film Festival. Didn’t feel like hitting the George Michael concert with the rest of the Birthday celebrators, so I had a beer, a quick nap, then wandered down to Rainbow Harbor to visit my TP stomping grounds, almost exactly 1 year later.
Weird, weird. I only spent a week of my life here, but it popped back like a bright, coppery memory from college. If that makes any sense.
Didn’t see anyone I recognized. Didn’t stay for a drink.
A full day of SF sailing. Wore shorts from dock to dock, which was slightly bizaare in late June here.
Raced the YRA southbay race with the Brothers Marsh and Todd on Elusive. Pretty sure we got 4th, even though we were short-handed and about 0/8 in the smooth rounding department. Had a good start and a nice first two legs, anyways.
After the race, we ducked into Treasure Island and caught some of the “Summer Sailstice“. One thing is for sure: There is a lot of sailing (and sailors) in the bay area who are part of a completely different scene than St. Francis after j/fest. Ran into Phillip and Nicole from the j/105 Racer X and kept the vibe alive by riding the KLR up to Bolinas to watch some bluegrass at Smileys.
A family-oriented post with nothing to do with sailing.
Heather and I took Shanti out for a quick sail and to meet Bob and Shana in the cove just north of Ft. McDowell on the east side of Angel Island. We rafted up to them, which was convenient, but having the rigs swinging into each-other when the ferry wakes came through the cove was a bit nerve-wracking.
Bob and Karin came out on Charisma too, so it was an OCSC basic keelboat reunion for the better halves.
Heather and I took a spin around San Pablo Bay before returning to SFYC, where I managed to knock off a couple quick chores before calling it a day.
